The Initial Preparation Workload

Under-estimating the website preparation time

I have noticed over the years that once the website infrastructure is established, the task to complete the website with the proper content and structure may often be an under-estimated burden.

When you look at the workload - from the moment that the website is ready to accept content - it will normally be as the graph below:

Once the site is set up, you can see from the above graph, that the time involved in maintaining a running website is not very high, and fairly easy to manage.

New freedom in adding and changing content

With a WordPress infrastructure, and the freedom available (with the new website) in being able to quickly and easily rework the content, the following inevitably happens:

  • The realization that the original content is old and stale. It has to be reworked - taking some additional time.
  • The realization that you actually can easily add some new and fresh content (that you always wanted to add) - that wasn’t possible before.
  • The current job (apart from updating the website) has to go on…..

The result is either that you all of a sudden work three hours extra per day, or slow the loading of content down - together with the implementation of your new website.

How to overcome the initial additional workload

There are three ways to address the small problem of setting up the initial content for your new business website:

  1. Arrange all your new content beforehand and have it ready when your new website launches.
  2. Hire (or allocate) an additional resource to assist in overcoming the initial workload
  3. Use Maroonblog.com staff (or other trained staff) to assist with the initial workload.

How long is the initial workload

What we find in practice is that the initial workload in preparing and loading the content on to the website takes from four to ten working days. This may have a tremendous impact on anybody’s already busy schedule.

Once a website is propagated with the initial content, the workload reduces dramatically. It then becomes fairly easy to run and maintain the website.
